To be considered for a TA position as an instructor, an international student must take the TOEFL iBT or the IELTS and achieve a speaking band score of at least 28 on the TOEFL iBT or a speaking band score of 8.0 on the IELTS. An international student who achieves a speaking band score of 23-27 on the TOEFL iBT or a speaking band score of 7.0-7.5 on IELTS may be considered for a TA position as an instructor only after passing the microteaching test administered by ITAP at UConn. (See here for more details.) An international TA who fails the microteaching test will be assigned duties other than teaching and may be required to take English language courses. An international student who does not pass the micro teaching test by the end of their first year may lose financial support.
